5 Steps To Help Medium-Sized Business Increase Revenue And Grow
In order to remain independent and avoid venture funding, manufacturers must institute a lean business model that can increase productivity and reduce overheads.
To remain competitive, manufacturers must ask themselves questions such as: How can I develop and produce my products faster? What are the business practices that will enable me to run my business as efficiently as possible? What metrics do I use to measure my business performance? How can I increase the rate of new product innovations? What are my monthly overhead costs and profits?
Manufacturers have excellent ideas for new products, however, if it takes too long to bring them to market and with procedures that require high overheads, they are not likely to survive. For small manufacturers, there is usually a limited amount of attention paid to internal business procedures as they usually have a limited number of staff, therefore, manual procedures are adopted and more staff are employed to deal with the rising number of issues, rather than taking time to analyse customer behaviour and make strategic investments that maintain product innovation and improve customer service.
A main cause for manufacturers to fail as a business comes from the lack of formal internal procedures that support business practices. Having a proactive approach to internal business procedures helps the organisation to grow and helps support the current level of business.
This lack of defined processes prevents the organisation from growing and can lead to the potential failure of a company. Introducing procedures for each project can be labour intensive; however, manufacturers can position themselves for success without recruiting additional people, by simply considering and adopting the following five key planning guidelines:
- Vision – have a clear understanding of the product/service, the need/wants of the customer/market you are looking to meet, understand your customer's needs, and be knowledgeable of the guiding principles underlying the organisation.
- Process – have a clear understanding of lean manufacturing and the Six Sigma principles behind manufacturing which aim to eliminate waste throughout the whole manufacturing process. Focus on the production and delivery of products which are directly related to customer orders.
- Metrics – identify, define and regularly communicate the key performance indicators (KPI's) that can keep each aspect of the business on track in order to meet established long-term goals of the organisation.
- Automation – take advantage of automated technologies that can accelerate individual processes such as design and engineering, production, quality control, product movement, inventory management, order fulfilment and accounting.
- Information Technology – Enable information and data to be shared systematically by internal departments and external resources in order to increase efficiency.
After adopting this strategy, it becomes a matter of bringing simplicity to what may become a more complex issue as the organisation grows. Complexity arises when there is a lack of focus and lack of discipline to work within the boundaries of a defined strategy.
Today manufacturers have more pressure to do ‘more with less' whether it is increased competition, the down-turn in the economy or rising material costs. Developing the above strategy can help you to position your company in a way that prepares it for additional pressures that may be added and can quickly pay dividends.
